As Andy Murray mania swept the nation the County team had its own battle over the grass at Sudbury. Yet another familiar summer day as we know it this year – warmish with a couple of mighty downpours. The team was Ross Dickson, Justin Phelps, Daniel Jeffries, Max McGrail, Kieron O’Connor, Niall Keogh, Liam Ainsworth and Harry Maher who was earning his 1st cap.

A.M Foursomes. Off to a devastating start as we surged into a 3 ½ - ½ lead with some glorious golf from tee to green. Ross/Justin were a/s: Dan/Niall won 4/2: Max/Harry won 2/1 and Kieron/Liam also wrapped up their match 2/1.

P.M singles. As the final singles reached the turn the matches were interrupted by another downpour. The officials of both teams raced into action and used bunker rakes to sweep away the water from the greens – a noble effort and thanks to all. The singles ebbed and flowed to the joy and dismay of the team managers. Ross up against the Beds England squad player was slightly disappointed within himself to end up a/s having lost the final hole. Dan was thwarted by long putts over the last couple of holes and went down 2 down. Justin 1 down after 16 and threatening to give the game up drew on all his class and experience to win both the last 2 holes to clinch a 1 up win (he won’t give up the game). Kieron after 16 found himself in the same position and to his great credit also did the same to secure his win. Liam fought back after early losses but went down 2/1. Max went about his work faultlessly, well apart from one 3 putt, and won 5/4.

Niall a/s after 10 spurted through the next holes and won 4/2. Harry 1 up throughout his game played a delightful up and down on 18 to maintain his lead.

Overall victory by 9 – 3 but closer than the result looks.

Earlier in the week at the East Berks Stag Justin was 3rd overall with scores of 72 and 69. The team of Justin, Max and Ross were joint 1st only losing on countback to Essex.
