Gyu Ho Lee was crowned the 2018 Middlesex County Champion. The plus two handicapper from Mill Hill Golf Club beat in-form Sudbury member Niall Keogh 2&1 in the final of the County Championship at Muswell Hill Golf Club, on Sunday, having qualified in 7th over 36 holes, on Friday.
The 21-year-old came through the toughest of draws to reach the final. Defeating two of the local-favourites, firstly, Joe York, in the round of 16 and top-qualifier, Mitchell Hollis, in the quarter final. In the semi-final he faced the five-time, and defending champion, Justin Phelps. The match that ebbed and flowed, but it was Gyu Ho that produced the goods when it mattered, taking a two up lead on the back nine in which he wouldn't relinquish.
In the final, Gyu Ho played within himself throughout, finding fairways and consistently hitting greens in regulation. This steady golf wore down a determined Niall, and despite holing an incredible 30ft putt to keep the match alive, Niall was unable to overturn the deficit and Gyu Ho wrapped up the match up on the 17th hole with a solid par and in doing so picked up his first County Championship title.
Gyu Ho will now represent Middlesex in the England Golf Champion of Champions competition at Woodhall Spa, in September.
The 2019 Championship will be held at Wyke Green Golf Club between May 31st and 2nd June.
