Ladies’ County Week was this year hosted by Hampshire and took place at Hockley Golf Club.
We were represented by a tiny core team made up of only six players:-
Ye Hee Lee
Boosted on Friday by the addition of Tara Watters and Mandy Miller.
Small really did turn out to be beautiful as this little band of fighters, led by Gemma Allman, gave everything in pursuit of our best ever result. Playing 36 holes each in searing temperatures of 30 degrees plus every day did nothing to dampen spirits, though it certainly took its toll on minds and bodies.
We went down by a single point to Sussex on day 1, winning four of the afternoon singles matches, and by only two to mighty, all-conquering, eventual winners Surrey on day 2. Day 3 saw us halve our match with Kent…so close. Day 4 was a well-earned rest day and we went to the zoo and then the girls went in to Winchester to get their nails done (sorry gents, it’s a girl thing!). Mental fatigue was probably setting in by day 5 and despite the arrival of Tara and Mandy we went down 6 – 3 to hosts Hampshire. It had turned very windy by Friday and I think that local knowledge of the conditions for our opponents probably played a part in our worst showing of the week.
I had asked the team to come back with 12 points and they rewarded me with 15. A remarkable achievement by a remarkable team. To say that I am thrilled and proud would fall short of the mark.
The County should be justifiably proud of its Ladies First Team.
