Northwood played host to the 2018 Gowland Finals and, as ever, the course was presented in superb condition.
The first of the semi-finals was between James Ellis of Hendon and Simon Westgarth of Fulwell. It was a great tussle between the two and it was Simon that held a 1 up lead at halfway. However, James fought back strongly winning a string of holes to secure the match 3&2.
The second semi-final saw Sudbury's Niall Keogh take on Ealing junior, Tayan Wagjiani. After a fairly even start, some excellent golf from Niall saw him pull away from Tayan. He took a 3 up lead heading into the back 9. Niall would extend his lead to 4 up on the 10th and did not let that slip, eventually winning 4&3.
The final was decided and it would be a battle between two Middlesex County players.
Niall's fine form would continue and he took a 2 up lead on the front 9. The back 9 was an up and down affair. James won the 10th to cut the deficit, only for Niall to regain his 2 up advantage on the 11th, but then lost it again on the 12th. The next two holes were halved, before James rolled in a birdie putt on 15 to tie the match. However, a wayward approach on 16 and a solidly played hole by Niall meant he regained the lead with two holes remaining.
James leaked his tee shot on 17 right and found the stream that meanders its way through the short but challenging hole. Niall safely found the green in two and when James missed his long par attempt, the match was all but sealed. Niall rolled his putt up close to the hole and tapped in for the win and his second George Gowland Salver.
