Wyke Green's Joe Smith captured the Middlesex Mid-Amateur Championship in style with a four stroke margin of victory at Muswell Hill Golf Club. Leading by four heading into the final round, the ex-professional could afford a final round of 75 to finish clear of last year's champion, Gary Clark, of Pinner Hill on two-over par for the championship.
Smith, a member of the Middlesex Men's First Team, opened the championship with an impressive two-under par round of 69 to give him a comfortable cushion going into the final round.
With rain showers and windy conditions prevailing in North London, Smith was a clear winner of the 36 hole tournament.
Clark signed for rounds of 75 and 73 to secure the runner-up spot while Muswell Hill member Nick Clarke took third place on ten-over par, eight shots behind the winner.
In the nett competition, Ealing member, Fintan McQuirk, returned scores of 71 and 72 to win the prize by four shots from John Kaseke of Haste Hill.
It was a good day for Muswell Hill, who picked up the team prize. The team which consisted of Nick Clarke, Seb Frankiss, Steve Ferris and Steve Walsom finished just one shot clear of Pinner Hill with a combined total of +38.
