The Pearson Middlesex County Semi-Finals & Finals were held at Finchley Golf Club yesterday.
As always, the weather was the big talking point.
With an amber warning for thunder & lightening issued for the day and heavy rain forecast for the whole day, I wasn't sure we would start never mind finish.
Miraculously, we got off to a dry start and even completed the morning games without getting wet.
Hampstead played Grim's Dyke & Muswell Hill played Ealing.
Grim's Dyke were our first finalists to come through and Ealing were victorious in a close match which went down to the 7th game.
Grim's Dyke teed off against Ealing and it wasn't long before the promised rain started. And boy, did it rain!
Both the 9th & the 18th greens were flooding so the referees were in constant contact with each other trying to coax all the games through the 9th without having to call off the match, and they just managed to do so. And then the sun came out...but not for long. Two games were finished when the heavens open up again. Now the race was on to see if the match would come to a conclusion without any games reaching the 18th which was very quickly becoming flooded again. Jason, our Middlesex Secretary and Robbie, our Chief Referee, were out in the pouring rain assisting one group who reached the 18th, sweeping puddles away with the flat sides of rakes and determining the correct spot to place the ball to get a clear path to the flag. Having managed to do so, that group then had to go down the 19th! Then it started raining even harder and it all became untenable, the score was 3-1 to Ealing with games on the 16th and 17th only having one hole in it and one game going down the 19th, but there was no choice, we had to call it off.
Lots of very wet players and caddies put their clubs away, changed their clothes and trickled into the club house - and in the meanwhile the sun came out again!
At this point I was very conscious of all those marvellous people from Hampstead & Muswell Hill Golf Clubs who had been supporting from the clubhouse all afternoon and it was now nearly 6pm.
After conversations with everyone involved, especially the Captains of Grim's Dyke & Ealing, we decided to hold prize giving, have speeches and thanks, let everyone go home and then get the remaining 3 matches out again to finish off their games. What troopers!
It didn't take long for the game on the 19th to force a conclusion to the match with Ealing being our overall winners.
Congratulations Ealing and commiserations to Grim's Dyke who fought hard, and to both teams a big high five for behaving with great sportsmanship.
Ealing will be representing Middlesex at the Inter-County Finals which will be held at Batchworth Park Golf Club on 24th July 2019, please come along to support them if you can.
Sincere thanks to Finchley Golf club and Middlesex Golf for all they did to help make this a successful day.
