Middlesex Finals Day 1 - Men's Gowland, Women's Singles, and Women's Foursomes

The Men's Gowland Salver, the Women's Singles KO, and the Women's Foursomes KO's semi-finals and finals were played on Sunday 18th October at Crews Hill GC. Traditionally, the Men's Senior KO would have been played on the same day but veteran Gerry Fitzgerald had succeeded in the unlikely and reached the semi-finals of both the Gowland and Senior KO. Hence, the Senior KO was postponed until Sunday 1st November.

The weather was ideal, dry and no wind for the entirety of the day. The course was in magnificent shape and presented the perfect setting the County Finals. There was nowhere to hide, good golf was needed to prevail.

In the morning's semi-finals, back-to-back reigning champion Niall Keogh took on Rhodri Harston and Peter Milligan took on Gerard Fitzgerald in the men's Gowland. Yvonne McSherry was up against Amanda Storer and Hilary Ormrod took on Juliet Melford in the Women's Singles KO. In the Women’s Foursomes Ealing GC 3 was against Muswell Hill GC 2 and it was an all Muswell Hill affair in the last semi-final of the day with Muswell Hill GC 3 taking on Muswell Hill GC 1.

Semi-Final results ...

Niall Keogh Vs Rhodri Harston 2up

Peter Milligan 20th Vs Gerard Fitzgerald

Yvonne McSherry 3&2 Vs Amanda Storer

Hilary Ormrod 5&4 Vs Juliet Melford

Ealing GC 3 Vs Muswell Hill GC 2 8&6

Muswell Hill GC 3 1up Vs Muswell Hill GC 1.

The Finals ...

In a feat that may never be replicated again, every player and team in the finals were all from one club, Muswell Hill GC! A testament to a great golfing club.

In the Gowland final, Rhodri Harston got off to a fast start and was quickly 3up through 6 holes. He never looked blinked and made it almost impossible for Peter Milligan to claw his way back. Peter found the water off the tee on the difficult 12th hole to go 4dn which seemingly drained any hope of a come back from Peter and Rhodri marched on to a 5&4 victory.

The Women's Singles KO, was a much tighter affair. It was nip and tuck early on and the Yvonne and Hilary made the turn A/S. Yvonne momentarily had a 1up lead during the back nine but Hilary won the 17th to take it down 18. Hilary looked like assured a victory after two impressive shots to just short of the green but nerves must have crept in as she let Yvonne earn an unlikely half. So it went to extra holes! The 19th was playing long and Hilary took advantage of her longer hitting to win the hole and the Championship at her first attempt.

In the Women's Foursomes KO, May Cahill and Ines Hellmayr took on fellow Muswell Hill members Ruth Holmes & Rose-Marie Casas. This was another tight match and May Cahill and Ines Hellmayr found themselves 1up through 9. They lost their lead to go 1nd through 13 but fought back to force extra holes. Neither team could get home in two on the long 19th but Ines Hellmayr stepped up to the occasion and hit a sensational hybrid from 155yds into 6ft to seal victory for the pair. A fitting end to a great day.

Thanks to all of those that entered and competed these KOs. We hope to see you all again next year. Congratulations to all our finalists, you should all be very proud. And a special thanks to Crews Hill for accommodating the finals and for taking such great of all the Middlesex players, staff, volunteers, and supporters.
