On Sunday October 25th the Men's President's Foursomes and the Men's Sixes finals took place at Grim's Dyke GC. Originally meant to be hosted at Fulwell GC, the finals' venue was moved as the Fulwell President's Foursomes team had reached the final for the second straight year. Middlesex, and all the competitors, are very appreciative of Grim's Dyke GC for hosting the finals on such short notice. We got extremely lucky as it rained cats and dogs all morning but about one hour before the finals were due to tee off, the blue skies arrived and not one drop of rain fell the the entire afternoon.
The President's Foursomes Final was a repeat of the 2019 final. Fulwell, the 2019 Champions, were back to defend their title against a youthful Enfield team eager to make up for last year's close call. A scratch foursomes competition, the President's Foursomes always produces some stellar golf.
Representing Fulwell GC was ...
Match 1 - Robbie Lyon & Harry Light
Match 2 - Ryan Clifford & Rob Mills
Match 3 - Darren Hedderman & John Hicks
Representing Enfield GC was ...
Match 1 - Greg Horwood & Mike Davis
Match 2 - Matt Andrews & Ben Davies
Match 3 - Will Orridge & Michael Peak
In a match of extremely high standard it was always going to be close. Enfield claimed first blood by winning the 2nd match 3&2 while the 1st match was going down the 18th. Fulwell's par was good enough for them to win the 18th and force extra holes. After an approach that left Fulwell in great position, a poor lag putt from off the green left them scrambling, eventually having to hole a 6ft put for par. Enfield chipped inside and held their nerve to hole a 5ft birdie putt and the win for the club. Enfield's investment in their youth has paid off on the big stage.
The Middlesex Sixes Final saw Crews Hill GC pitted against Muswell Hill GC. The Sixes is one of Middlesex's most popular tournaments. This year we had 24 of the 32 clubs in Middlesex enter so the champions would certainly have bragging rights in the County.
Representing Crews Hill GC was ...
Match 1 - John McDaid & Liam McGrenaghan
Match 2 - George Jones & Mark Howard
Match 3 - Luke Savage & Shane Gallagher
Representing Muswell Hill GC was ...
Match 1 - Nick Love & David Brett
Match 2 - Dennis Dineen & Steve Love
Match 3 - Ryan Dean & Graeme Jones
Both clubs managed convincing victories, with Muswell Hill Winning the first match and 5&4 and Crews Hill winning the last match 6&4. So it all came down the 2nd match, which seemed like it would certainly go Crews Hill's way as they were 5up through 10 holes. But Muswell Hill began a fight back and the Crews Hill men began making mistakes. The 5up lead dwindled to 2up and the crowds gathered as both pairings went down the final few holes. On the 17th, Crews Hill managed to gather themselves and make a solid par which was good enough for the half and the win.
