The Middlesex first team made a long-awaited return to competitive golf at a wet and windy Muswell Hill CG on Sunday 23rd of May. The weather played its part but the Middlesex players were strong enough to overcome it, as well as their strong and consistent opponents, Bedfordshire.
There were some new faces making their debuts and, the new and existing players all played their part to defeat Bedfordshire 5-3 to begin their season with a good win to go forward into the remaining county fixtures throughout the year.
2019 County Champion Jack Neil led the line and despite an early setback, turned his match around to succeed winning 2 up. Justin Phelps, the most senior player used his experience to overcome his match with a strong 4&2 win, consistent as ever. Debutant Liam Cella maintained his game to retain a half, with another debutant Will Oritage adding another win to the team as they led 3.5 - 0.5 after four games played. Halfway through the matches, Middlesex only needed one more win from the next four games to win.
Kane Stone came in next, however, he was defeated 2&1. Next in was our third debutant Michael Peak, also defeated 2&1 and Bedfordshire were showing signs of never giving up, not that we ever expected them to. Danial Parsons was able to put a stop to this comeback. His consistent golf secured him a 2&1 win and getting Middlesex over the line to the important 4.5 points. At the back was Niall Keogh and with 13 birdies shared with his opponent, returned a half point and completed the day's results finishing 5-3.
Despite the slow, late start to this seasons golfing year, the first competitive match in over 18 months produced a strong win and helps Middlesex get off to the all-important winning start. They'll look to use this as a base for the rest of the season, and with another match only a week later against BB&O away, this match was invaluable for all involved.
