The final of the Men's Middlesex Frank Rowse, the men's eight-man team scratch KO, was played on Sunday 12th September at Northwood GC between Sudbury GC and Pinner Hill GC.

A huge thank you must go to Ray Grant and his team at Northwood GC for the gracious accommodation of the final and to Wes Walker and his green staff who work so hard and had the course in sensation condition.

Pinner Hill GC was represented by

  1. Gary Clark
  2. Dave Hale

  5. Martin Walsh
  6. Martin Toye
  7. Ritik Patel
  8. Mark Abbot.

Sudbury was represented by

  2. Nick Avery
  3. Daniel Vincent
  4. Dan Jeffries

  8. Ian Taylor

In the morning Foursomes, Pinner Hill GC came up against a very strong Sudbury team and lost the first three matches. The final pairing of Mark Abbot and Martin Walsh won an all-important win to make the morning session 3-1 to Sudbury GC.

Going into the afternoon singles, with 8 singles matches to play, Pinner Hill needed 5 ½ pts to win and Sudbury needed 3½ pts to win.

Pinner Hill GC decided to go for broke and put out a strong order to put some early points on the board. It worked and Pinner Hill GC won 4 early points and all of a sudden it was 6-4 with 2 games on the course. David Hale beat Glen Simons to make the score 6-5 to Sudbury with one match left.

So it came down to game 8 where Ritik Patel of Pinner Hill GC found himself 2 down with 4 holes to go. On the 15th Ritik holed a 6 ft putt to claw one hole back. With nerves building, on the 16th Ritik made a scrappy bogey and this meant that Ian Taylor from Sudbury had a 15ft putt for par to go 2up and win the trophy. Agonisingly, Ian 3-putted and suddenly it was all square with 2 to play. Ritik won the 17th with a regulation par to go 1up with one to play. The 18th was a similar story and with some impressive ball-striking under pressure, Ritik won the hole to even up the match at 6-6.

Playoff time!!!!!

The teams chose Gary Clark v Dan Jeffries to play the playoff. Gary teed off first and hit the fairway while Dan pulled his tee shot into the trees to the left of the fairway. Dan had to chip back onto the fairway leaving a difficult pitch shot for his third. Meanwhile, Gary hit the green, 20 ft from the pin. Dan pitched it to 15 ft. Gary’s put edged past the hole and the putt was conceded for a par 4. This left Dan a 15ft putt to keep Sudbury’s hopes alive but his effort missed and Pinner Hill GC won the 2021 Frank Rowse Middlesex Team Championship.

Both teams are a credit to their clubs but a special mention must go to Sudbury who were very gracious in defeat.
