Middlesex Seniors hosted Essex at a dry and fiery Muswell Hill GC on Tuesday 26th of July. Needing to bounce back from the 9-1 humiliation at the hands of BB&O, the team also had their eye on avenging last year’s 7-3 reverse against Essex at Orsett GC.
On paper, the team were strong, with 3 home club players, but as it turned out Essex pulled the stops out. The lead match of Nick Clarke v Chris Aukett was tight when the Essex man birdied the 8th to go back to level par and 2 up. Clarke was not fazed, however, and proceeded to win the next 6 holes to go to dormy 4, eventually winning on the 16th. The second match was tight all the way, with Fulwell ace Simon Westgarth eventually winning on the 18th, matches 3 and 4 did not go our way, but at 2-2 with 4 scores in we were looking good. Alas, a clutch of matches were lost out on the course and by the time Clay O’Shea had reached the 17th dormy 2 down, we were already 5-2 down and the tie was lost. West Middlesex stalwart Michael McCormick was the only other player contributing with a well-fought half point, and the final score was 7.5 to 2.5 in Essex’s favour.

Another big disappointment from a squad that should be performing better, our season is now all but done. Thanks to Muswell Hill for hosting and providing an excellent hot meal afterwards.
