Penultimate Challenger Match at Home to Bedfordshire Union

Third match of the season

From the pen of the our unique and vibrant Captain

Joe Smith

“We hosted  Bedfordshire County Golf Union at Finchley GC on the 20th August  .. it was to be be a hot day of walking at the difficult undulating north London course  .. pin positions would be crucial. I had advised my players of the flags and where we should aim for certain parts  of the greens  .. take plenty of nutrition  and go enjoy..

First pairing Fullwell duo and friends Simon Westgarth and Robbie Lyons  brought home a half point in a close encounter right to the end ..  world ranked Rymer smith and the very talented Alfie Reynolds got the county’s first win by the way of 3 and two … another first time pairing Jimmy Eastwood and Micheal Okon looked set for a 3 and two defeat but Okon  bravely put in a 12 footer then   Eastwood did the very same on 17  for a  birdie and to keep  hopes alive on 18. For those that know this is a very difficult finishing hole where they needed an up and down for a half point.  Jimmy obliged playing a great pitch to 3 feet  …I didnt know who was most nervous me or him but Micheal had tooknice care of things to get a much needed half point … Myself  and Andrea Bothma got  the wrong side of a close match losing two and one  ….

So it 2 - 2 at lunch, all to play for

Robbie Lyons got Middlesex of to victory by 3 and 1 win ..

followed by Alfie Reynolds 3&2 .. Debutant Jimmy Eastwood would  win his first singles 3 and 2 Andrea Bothma would win 3 and 1 Micheal Okon would finish of  his job nicely by 4 and 3 …

So we stood 7 matches to 2

Simon Westgarth would lose on the 17 the by 3 &. 1  player manager (me)  Joe Smith would win by the biggest margin 5 and 4  for the 2nd time this year earlier in the first team he scored the biggest margin of the year by winning 7 and 5 … this left only one match out there with Rymer Smith  with all points crucial with a  game coming up against Essex in which will now be a league deciding one .. smith made a brilliant up and down on 18 to get a half point …

8.5 - 3.5 Win for Middlesex

I’m very proud of my team they always listen nicely and did their best, what more can I ask and we have the victory, now it’s over to our next after playing 3 matches we’re in a position where we can WIN the league what more can we ask!”

Good luck in the final match at HOME (Wyke Green) at home to Essex on the 3rd September
